The TV Bafta awards may have been a prime opportunity for the likes of actors Jodie Comer and Phoebe Waller Bridge to celebrate designer fashion, but This Country star Daisy May Cooper had other ideas.

Walking the red carpet at the Virgin Media British Academy Television Awards on Sunday evening, Cooper surprised onlookers when she posed for photographs wearing a dress made out of bin bags.

The actor accessorised her polyethylene garment with an “embellishment” of crisp packets and fast food wrappers on the dress’ train, a tin can handbag and a bin lid hat.

Explaining the inspiration behind her look, Cooper told ITV reporters: "I wanted people to say, 'Oh what are you wearing? Gucci?' No, just bin bags."

Cooper added that her mother grouped together with her friends to create the dress and that she donated the money she would have spent on a “normal” red carpet dress to her local food bank.

"No, my mum did with her two friends Viv and Sharon, but I decided instead of wearing a normal dress, I'd donate what I would have spent to charity and wear bin bags,” she explained.

“There is a reason behind it."

Cooper’s dress has been praised on social media, with some calling the star a "true queen".

“Brilliant. Next stop... the MET! [sic],” commented one user in reference to last week’s Met Gala in New York.

“Better than a lot of the very expensive dresses this year and more on theme!” added another.

Another commented: “My f**king hero.”

"A true queen," one fan described the actor.

Last year, Cooper – who stars alongside her brother Charlie Cooper in the hit BBC show – wore a Swindon Town football dress to the TV Baftas.

The dress was emblazoned with the word “Swindon” across the chest and her This Country character’s surname “Mucklowe” on the back. She teamed the outfit with a pair of bright red football socks.

“I just decided it had to be done, because Kerry wears Swindon, we’re doing it for the south-west,” she told reporters at the time.

Last year, Cooper won the award for “Best scripted comedy” and “Best female performance in a comedy programme”.
