How to wear this season’s coloured eyeliner
It’s not a trend for shrinking violets
Acid brights like lime, orange, cyan and lurid green aren’t colours one would immediately consider when it comes to makeup but, if the autumn/winter runways are anything to go by, these strident shades could soon be making their way into your beauty stash.
Not one for shrinking violets, this is a look that packs some serious punch and its arrival on the runway was by no means an accident.
This season, the message of female strength dominated through shouty showmanship and don’t-mess-with-me dresses but also powerful, Pink-inspired eyeliner.
At Dior’s show, which was inspired by France’s women’s liberation movement that began during the revolt in May of 1968, saw Maria Grazia Chiuri stage a protest of her very own; a look that was replicated by makeup artist Peter Philips.
Here, with Parisian feminists in mind, he used Diorshow On Stage Liner in a variety of shades to line the top and bottom of the models’ eyes.
“I didn’t want makeup that was too pretty,” Philips told Vogue.
“The blunt liner is cool and conceptual, but not too precious. You can say what you have to say and be taken seriously, but also show that you have fun with your makeup and enjoy being a creative woman.”
Elsewhere, Salvatore Ferragamo used MAC’s Chromaline pencils to create bold swipes of colour while Chromat opted for neon aqua smudges and Tibi hailed angular flicks as the look du jour.
If you have colour makeup phobia, the idea of wearing technicolour lines might seem like a serious no-go but we assure you that it is fairly easy to incorporate into your regime.
To avoid looking overdone, the first thing you need to remember is to keep the rest of your makeup simple, so opt for nudes on your lips, if anything, and avoid wearing too much blusher or bronzer.
Once you’ve decided on an eyeliner shade, you then have a number of options. Using super-thin lines for a discreet finish, draw a subtle cat eye or add a flash of colour to the lower lash line to enhance your eyes.
For a more intense look, use a bigger pencil for a more graphic line and add lashings of mascara to really make the colour pop.
