Oof. Everything I own is too warm right now

Yup, whether you're relaxing poolside or enjoying the balmy micro-climates of public transport, there are always moments in summer when it feels like even stripping off to your underwear wouldn't help. Paradoxically, the less you wear, the worse it feels sometimes. Three words: upper-thigh chafe.

So the answer is a onesie-and-balaclava combo?

Actually more fabric isn't a bad idea, but pass on the micro-fibre fleece or heavy wool unless you're in training for a Japanese gameshow endurance test. What you need is something to keep the sun off, but loose enough to let the air circulate. With pleasingly simple logic, something a bit floaty and light tends to make you feel accordingly breezy.

Maxi dress? Mm, how very boho. I'm not Jade Jagger, you know

Hey, it doesn't have to be a tie-died kaftan, although if you're off to Ibiza, that's perfectly acceptable. A simple, long singlet style in a plain colour looks nicely minimal – check out Topshop's Cami racer-back version available in several shades (£18, topshop.com).

Alternatively, for something a little dressier for your beach weddings and posh barbecues, Asos has this chiffon number with a floral print from its Salon range (£100, asos.com).
