How to get the look: Party trousers

Posh yoga pants?

Shhh. Let's not draw attention to that particular similarity. Because actually, yes, in these lovely loose-fit trousers from Theory (£265, stylebop.com, above), you could comfortably do your downward dog, but they're equally up to scratch for standing around elegantly at a party. Or a combination of the two, when it gets to that point in the evening.

Always keen for an evening look not involving serious leg.

The Christmas party cocktail dress, despite its popularity, isn't hugely workable in the northern hemisphere for anyone without time for the endless buffing of limbs. A posh trouser is an excellent option; think upscale fabric (those Theory trews are softest velvet), especially if you're opting for black – otherwise people might start harassing you for canapés.

Won't I look boring in the sea of metallic strapless minidresses?

No, you will look chic. And if you have a pang of anxiety about such things, mask it with a borderline smug/vacant face, which everyone knows is the greatest fashion accessory of all. If you insist on a bit more razzle-dazzle, go to Whistles for the Lenah leopard jumpsuit – glamorous but simple, as well as involving fewer goosebumps than most partywear (£140, whistles.com).
