Olivia Wilde embraces motherhood in Glamour’s September issue with breastfeeding picture
The American actress and model appears breastfeeding her three-month-old baby son in the magazine's biggest issue
Olivia Wilde joins the celebrities and supermodels that have been documenting the early stage of their motherhood by sharing pictures of them breastfeeding and bonding with their little ones.
The American actress and model posed breastfeeding her three-month-old son, Otis, for Glamour’s September issue photoshoot.
As the cover star of the glossy magazine, Wilde appears in the feature as a glamorous new mum who looks submerged in a parallel world with her baby. In one picture she’s seen wearing a Roberto Cavalli feather dress and geometric Prada shoes while breastfeeding bare-bottom Otis in a dinner booth.
In the feature, Olivia told Glamour: “Being shot with Otis is so perfect because any portrait of me right now isn’t complete without my identity as a mother being a part of that.
Yesterday, the 30-year-old posted the picture on Twitter saying: “Otis ordered milkshakes. Luckily I had some on me. Then he peed on my dress. Good kid.” The Tweet was followed by another post that said: “Thanks @glamourmag for knowing there's nothing indecent about feeding a hungry baby.”
The picture became a controversial topic on the web, but it’s not the first one to spark the discussion. Other young mothers like Gisele Bündchen and Miranda Kerr, the highest-paid models in the industry, have already caused a stir for posting images breastfeeding in their social media accounts.
Wilde added: “Breastfeeding is the most natural thing. I don’t know, now it feels like Otis should always be on my breast … You can be someone who is at once maternal and professional and sexy and self-possessed.”
Wilde looks flawless in the photographs and some negative response comes from mothers who don’t want to feel the pressure of looking perfect during the hectic days of motherhood, however, it’s most important to take into account that these women are models and are posing for a photo shoot with the help of hair stylists, makeup artists, wardrobe and of course Photoshop.
Wilde confirms this by saying: “I mean, I certainly don’t look like that when I’m breastfeeding.”
In the same Glamour issue, Dutch model and Victoria’s Secret Angel Doutzen Kroes is also featured as mother, but she’s shot before giving birth in July, as pregnant mother-to-be cradling her belly and wearing a cosy sweater dress.
Posing pregnant for fashion magazines is not a new idea for the fashion industry which seems to embracing motherhood. In the past, Cindy Crawford and Claudia Schiffer have posed pregnant in varying degrees of nudity and Chanel’s haute couture show was last month closed by a pregnant model, Ashleigh Good.
Glamour’s September issue is out on 12 August.
