With the weather taking a turn for the worst this week, it's hard to know exactly what to wear. The days of summer dresses seem to be over, yet it's far too early to whip out a winter coat.

A trip to Topshop rarely means you'll leave empty-handed, such is the pulling power of Britain's favourite high street store.

But as lovely as most of the things in store are, it's easy to get sidetracked by the shiny new trend on show - of which Topshop are very good at displaying.

With that in mind and the current weather predicament it's best to invest wisely. Items that can be layered up or down are very handy for when you inevitably get too hot running for the bus, then cold 10 minutes later.

Stick to neutral colours like black, grey, white and navy that will prove timeless in your wardrobe. Colourful separates are an exception, a neon jumper for example can be easily mixed and matched.
