For spring, adequate rain cloud battle armour is a must (Whistles)

If there's one nugget of fashion advice that's worth its weight in gold, it's that the unassuming waterproof jacket is an invaluable piece of clothing that should always be kept close to hand.

And as we begin to enter the season of blustery wet weather it's easy to see why; unexpected precipitation can catch any of us off guard, so investing in adequate rain cloud battle armor is a must.

However, this particular piece of sartorial armor doesn't have to take the guise of anything bulky such as a traditional trench coat. Instead look for something lightweight that can be kept in your bag and quickly thrown on if the heavens open.

Its very lightness is also one of its great advantages; if the weather is dry then utilise it as a layering piece and wear it under your coat for added insulation. This is what's called result-based outerwear in action.

And for any of you that grimace at the thought of owning anything remotely result-based, then think again; there's a profusion of hi-tech performance waterproofs available that are also stylish.

Plus, if you're intent on making a splash with colour then something like a traditional Danish slicker in bright yellow is a bold way to do this on grey drizzly days.

And because British summers are notoriously damp squibs, the long term forecast for any new raincoat that you buy is that you'll certainly get your wear out of it.
