Weekly fashion indicators: mad for plaid and Wellies

With fall in full swing, it's no wonder plaid shirts took the top spot on Polyvore users' top trends list this week. The checkered print has always conjured up a back-to-school feeling given its association with schoolgirl uniforms.

Tartan, a material traditionally worn as uniforms by the Scottish, has since evolved into a modern wardrobe staple. UK label Burberry is synonomous with plaid while other fashion brands from Jean-Paul Gaultier to Gwen Stefani's L.A.M.B. have also incorporated it into their collections. Plaid shirts, which look rustic when paired with classic Levi's but can also be downright hipster when worn with black skinny jeans, take the place of the previous week's more general trend of plaid.

Also topping the Polyvore trends chart this week were Wellington boots. "Wellies" have come a long way since being commissioned by the Duke of Wellington for practical purposes. The waterproof boots, made from rubber or PVC, have been spotted on fashionistas everywhere. After Kate Moss was seen waltzing around the Glastonbury festival in a pair, stores haven't been able to keep them in stock.

In brands, French house Lanvin holds onto the top spot while Danish label DAY Birger et Mikkelsen makes a new entry at number ten thanks to the immaculate tailoring and uniquely Scandinavian flair of its clothes (think embellished angora cardigans and louche-fitting, striped jersey tops).
