At this time of year, picking the right outfit can be tricky. Will the weather be hot, cold, or somewhere in between? On some days, the autumn chill is ever present; on others, it feels like July again.

Rather than opting for a complete wardrobe overhaul, the trick is to invest in a few versatile pieces that make transitioning from summer to autumn wear a piece of cake.

Lightweight knit

Merino Wool Jumper, £85, Reiss

A lightweight sweater, cardigan or roll neck jumper are easy staples that you can slip over a T-shirt or a shirt and tie.

Look for jumpers made from soft cotton blends or merino wool in grey, navy, khaki or burgundy.

Overshirt

Khaki Four Pocket Overshirt, £35, Topman

Also known as a ‘shacket’, the overshirt is usually crafted from thick cotton to distinguish it from a normal shirt. Opt for a cut that’s slim but still roomy enough to wear over a sweatshirt should the mercury dip.

Wool trousers

Wool Melange Trousers, £79, Cos

Making the switch from shorts to jeans can feel jarring, so meet in the middle with a pair of wool trousers instead.

Perfect with a tailored shirt or as a smart addition to a casual outfit, there’s a reason this style has been a favourite among industry insiders in recent years.

Buy them in a darker shade and wear with everything from stark white trainers to slick shoes.

Desert Boots

Desert Boots, £100, Clarks

Trawl the rainy streets in total confidence with a pair of sturdy desert boots: rugged enough for serious walking and smart enough for a special occasion.

While leather is your safest bet, don’t completely rule out suede boots. Just make sure you invest in a good shoe protector.

Raincoat

Long Jacket, £89, Rains

A lightweight waterproof jacket will protect you against those early autumn showers.

We recommend a neutral colour; something that can go with whatever's in your wardrobe. Make sure it’s roomy enough to wear with multiple layers when it’s extra cold too.
