Sunday lunch

The Tea Leaf Chenin Blanc 2014

A wonderfully expressive and distinctive Chenin Blanc from low-yield vines grown amid wild rooibos tea plants in the Western Cape. Really full, ripe flavours: tropical and citrus, some honey and spice, bracingly clean on the finish. Goes with all rich and garlicky fish dishes or spicy pork. £12, woodwinters.com; £11.25 (minimum purchase 12 bottles), nywines.co.uk

Midweek meal

Beaujolais-Villages Château de la Terrière 2012

From old vines on an estate dating back to the 16th century, this is top-notch Beaujolais-Villages – soft, opulent fruits, a touch of earth, some smoky undertones. Deceptively complex. Pair with autumnal casseroles and mushroom-based dishes. £9.99 (or £6.66 each for two if bought as part of six mixed bottles), Majestic

Bargain basement

Root: 1 Carménère, Viña Ventisquero 2012

A gorgeous, great-value Carménère from this excellent Chilean producer. Really luscious upfront blackberry fruit, balanced with some chocolate notes and the slightest hint of spice. Great with all roast meat dishes, particularly a venison steak. £7.99, Morrisons
