Sunday lunch

Guimaro Ribeira Sacra 2010

A lip-smacking, medium-bodied but full-flavoured wine, made with Spain's less well-known Mencía grape, grown on steep river terraces in the Ribeira Sacra area of the north-west. Perfumed and fresh, full of crunchy red-berry flavours, it is ideal for warmer-weather drinking and would be a perfect partner for tuna steaks in balsamic jus or pork escalopes. £10.95, thewinesociety.com; £10.08 (minimum purchase 12 bottles), goedhuis.com

Midweek meal

Viognier de Pennautier 2010

Only a vin de pays but as elegant as the massive château that adorns the label and made in the Montagne Noire area of the Languedoc by a 10th-generation wine-making family. Typically aromatic with scents of peaches and apricots on the nose, big fruit tastes, with buttery, honey touches and a long dry finish.Try with scallops or any flat white fish with a lemony sauce. £7.99, lebonvin.co.uk; £8, prospectwine.co.uk, £6.99 (each for two bottles as part of a mixed six-bottle purchase; normally £7.99), majestic.co.uk

Bargain basement

Château Mont Milan Corbières 2010

From elsewhere in the Languedoc, a wine which, at (just) under £5 a bottle would make a great buy for a barbecue during the upcoming long Bank Holiday weekend. A familiar blend of Mourvèdre, Grenache and Syrah, it is reassuringly robust, spicy and full-flavoured and would suit any grilled meats or Mediterranean vegetable dishes. Open well in advance. £4.99 (each for two bottles – normally £5.99 each – as part of a mixed six-bottle purchase), majestic.co.uk
