Percy Pig, everyone's favourite treat, is going away.

But just to another aisle.

M&S has announced it will move chocolates, sweets and Percy Pigs far from the till in an attempt to promote a healthier diet.

The move, which will take affect in September, comes after the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN) called for the UK's recommended intake of sugar to be cut in half to tackle skyrocketing obesity and diabetes rates.

M&S, which already has 'healthy lanes' instead of 'guilt lanes' at some of its stores, will phase out the supermarket sugar trap in the next three months.

Fellow supermarkets Morrisons, Tesco, Lidl, Aldi and Sainsbury's have also committed to instituting the change.

According to Tesco internal research, 65 per cent of shoppers want sweets to be removed in order to help them make healthier choices for children.

Asda is the last remaining major holdout, arguing it's providing "choice" for the customer.

But it's not like Percy Pig and his chocolate chums are actually going anywhere; shoppers will just have to go look for them.
