A £3.33 bottle of prosecco has been unveiled in a deal that fans of the Italian sparkling wine have dubbed the "bargain of the century".

Budget supermarket Lidl will sell a box of six bottles of its own-brand Allini Prosecco for £20, which works out at £3.33 each.

The deal will run on 26 and 27 August to coincide with the Bank Holiday weekend, before the price rises back up to £5.79 per bottle.

The wine from the Veneto region of Italy, seen as a cheap alternative to Champagne, has soared in popularity in recent years, with consumption doubling in the UK between 2013 and 2014.

Prosecco Watch, a Facebook page which tracks booze deals liked by over 100,000 users, alerted followers to Lidl’s offer.

Fans joked that they would camp out to make sure they don't miss out on the plonk, while others revealed their plans to stock up on the tipple in time for Christmas. One excited user called it the "bargain of the century."

The deal also caused a stir on Twitter, where one mother joked it was the "new school holidays survival kit".

Last year, the Allini Prosecco - which is made using Glera grapes - was named the best bargain prosecco in Good Housekeeping’s December issue.

The reviewer described the drink as “a little drier than some Proseccos”, as well as “light, refreshing and easy to drink” with a floral aroma of pear.
