"Merry Christmas" is the most talked about topic on Twitter on the first day of September in 2010.

"Twitter: The only place where people celebrate Christmas in August. Merry Christmas everyone," joke Twitter users while others add "September is the start of Christmas season here in the Philippines ...Merry Christmas!!"

The memes "#littleknownfactaboutme," "#ifihadapennyforeverytime" and "#blackandyellow" take the second, third and fourth positions on the list.

"OLLG" (short for the title of Justin Bieber's song "One Less Lonely Girl") is in fifth place ahead of "Earl," the name of a category 4 hurricane sweeping through the Atlantic Ocean. "Hurricane" is also a popular term on Twitter and is in tenth place on the charts.

Microbloggers are tweeting about "Brandi" Venus, a girl from the fifth season of American reality TV show The Bad Girls Club, sending her name into seventh place on Twitter's most talked about topics list.

According to Twitter users, American basketball player Shaquille O'Neal (aka "Shaq") challenged Canadian pop singer Justin Bieber to a basketball match for his TV show "Shaq Vs." and lost.

Chatter about the match has pushed "Shaq" into eighth place while the name of MTV reality series Teen Mom is in ninth place.
