Facebook Messenger and Instagram appear to have stopped working properly, with users complaining they are unable to send messages.

The sites were hit by a raft of complaints on outage tracking website Down Detector.

But the problems do not appear to be affecting everyone: some users were able to load Facebook as normal.

Issues appeared particularly prevalent on Messenger, with vast numbers of reports on Twitter.

Some said they were unable to send messages while other complained that new ones that were being sent were not arriving.

As such, users might not be aware that they are affected by the problems and miss out on messages that they might not be aware had been lost.

Users also complained that they had missed meetings because the app was not functioning, since its call features were not possible to use either.

Facebook’s platform status tracking page – which gives updates on major issues, how they are being fixed and how long they might last – did not show any problems.

The company had also not reported any problems through its official channels, which include profiles on Twitter.
