Death Stranding: Release date and other details of anticipated game revealed in live stream

The release date of Hideo Kojima's Death Stranding, perhaps the most anticipated game in the world, has finally been revealed.

It will arrive on PlayStation 4 on 8 November, Sony has announced.

The reveal came after a long live stream which began with a series of handprints covering the screen. As time went on – and the stream became one of the most popular on Twitch, with more than 100,000 people viewing at any one time – those handprints were pulled away, and gameplay footage and cinematic videos could be seen.

After that was over, the stream revealed the release date and pointed players towards the devoted page on the Sony site.

At the same time, creator Mr Kojima posted a tweet that revealed some general details about how the game might actually work.

Death Stranding still remains almost entirely mysterious. While various trailers and images have been released, they say very little about the game itself, or what it might actually include.

But the release date is the most concrete information yet to be released about the game – and at least gives a deadline by which more should be learnt about it.

The PlayStation page only mentions a limited number of features: that it will be one player, have the vibration focus and be optimised for the PS4 Pro. (The game has also been rumoured as one of the launch features of the PlayStation 5, but that has not been confirmed.)

"Experience a journey like nothing before it, from legendary game creator Hideo Kojima. Take control of working man Sam Bridges, as he braves a deadly and mysterious world where death’s tide lurks everywhere," a description on the same page reads.

"Featuring an all-star cast, including Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, Lindsay Wagner, Léa Seydoux and Guillermo del Toro, Death Stranding is a unique and unforgettable game."

Death Stranding is so anticipated in large part because it is the latest game from Hideo Kojima, the legendary creator of games including the Metal Gear Solid series. It is also the first game he has created since a high-profile departure from his long-time home at developer Konami, which has led to both excitement and concern about how the game could actually look.
