The first ever Fortnite World Cup is underway in New York, following 10 weeks of qualifying tournaments among 40 million competitors around the globe.

It is the most participated-in tournament of all time, according to Fortnite developer Epic Games, and already some players are making a name for themselves.

Within two hours of the first matches getting underway, online searches for the player Danyan Cat had surged by more than 3,000 per cent.

The Mexican YouTuber qualified as part of the Sunshine Soldiers team, who are competing in the Creative Finals on Friday.

Danyan Cat was competing against far more high-profile players in the Creative Finals, including the most successful Fortnite player of all time: Tyler 'Ninja' Blevins.

Danyan's YouTube following of 795,000 is just a fraction of Ninja's 22 million subscribers. She is known for her humorous videos playing games like Call of Duty, Sims 4 and Minecraft.

But as the Fortnite World Cup finals began, online interest in the 23-year-old was five-times higher than Ninja.

This helped push up her subscriber count by several thousand, though unfortunately her popularity did not help her performance against the best Creative Fortnite players.

Fish Fam took home the Golden Llama prize, taking home more than $1 million in prize money.
