A fan of the legendary Metal Gear video game series is in the process of recreating the entire first game using current-gen technology.

Dublin-based Airam Hernandez is using leading game engine Unreal Engine 4 to remake Hideo Kojima's 1998 masterpiece Metal Gear Solid, which sold over six million copies worldwide and kicked off a series which continues to top games charts today.

While the original Metal Gear Solid is a classic, the first PlayStation's rudimentary graphics capabilities haven't stood the test of time.

But if Hernandez ever manages to finish his project, gamers could one day play through the entire game again on the latest platforms, with up-to-date graphics and gameplay.

The latest in the series, The Phantom Pain, only came out in September 2015, so gamers aren't exactly crying out for new Metal Gear games.

However, the gameplay and storyline of the original still makes it a standout title, and there's an awful lot of nostalgia in the gaming world for the games that made the current generation of classics possible.

It's going to be a long and difficult task to complete Shadow Moses, the name Hernandez has given to the game, and there's a chance the finished version won't see the light of day at all if Konami objects to the unlicensed recreation.

But like the recent modern take on the much-loved 'Facility' level in legendary N64 game Goldeneye, his teaser trailer is getting a lot of people very excited.
