The latest Super Mario Bros. adventure is heading to Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo 3DS XL this summer, with a host of features that promise to be a solid gold hit.

Arriving in stores on August 17, New Super Mario Bros. 2 aims to test the skills of gamers by bringing classic Mario multi-platform action back to the fans – but with a very special 24 carat twist. In this all new Super Mario Bros. 3DS adventure, players will get a special challenge that represents a first for the series – the ability to collect one million coins!

Do you have what it takes to guide our hero through danger, risking life and limb to reach the end, knowing that one single mistake could see your precious haul of coins completely disappear? Can you dash, stomp, leap and fly through the advancing Goombas, Koopa Troopas and more, negotiating the tricky terrain of the Mushroom Kingdom while protecting a pocketful of precious pennies?

This golden opportunity is fraught with danger. Luckily there are a number of ways you can hone your skills to improve your chances of success. One such way is to check out the thrilling Coin Rush mode, where you’ll be given three random courses – selected from the stages of the game you’ve completed – and just one Mario to complete them all back-to-back. This means there’s absolutely no room for error, in fact, just one misstep and its game over!

Fans of multiplayer Mario mayhem will also be happy to hear that New Super Mario Bros. 2 also comes with a range of options to play with – or against – others. You can team up as Mario and Luigi, using your individual skills on the same screen to get through every level, or if you’d prefer, take on an opponent to see who can collect the most coins. Thanks to StreetPass, Nintendo 3DS console users can exchange this data and challenge others to collect more coins than them.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 is just one of Nintendo’s new Mario games that promises all the usual thrills and spills, with a very special golden twist on the gameplay. Whether you’re testing out the new power ups, transforming into Gold Mario or counting the coins, there are over 80 stages of play to complete – so there should be plenty to keep you coming back for more.

You can check out the New Super Mario Bros. 2 teaser site to see the official game trailer and have a look at some shiny new screenshots and ingots of game info. You can also find out more about how to pre-order the title from GAME or gamestation to collect a limited edition, gold* coin-shaped case.

*Please note that the New Super Mario Bros. 2 collectable gold coin case is gold-coloured only and does not contain any real gold.
