'Out of the mouths of babes oft times come gems', apparently.

But sometimes it seems children offer something a little more malevolent.

An online discussion about the creepiest things children say to their parents has become an unlikely internet hit with more than 10,000 comments being posted in less than 24 hours.

The question: 'Parents of Reddit, what is the creepiest thing your young child has ever said to you?', has attracted a huge number of responses, ranging from the bizarre to the downright chilling.

One Reddit user 'thingsimeanttobe' contributed: "My 5 year old at the time had night terrors and would scream in her sleep. One night I said 'mama's here its okay'. She looked right at me still asleep and screamed 'mama? But who is that behind you?'"

Another user, known as Redditors on the forum, posted: "I was tucking in my two-year-old, He said 'Goodbye dad.' I said, 'No we say good night.' He said, 'I know. But this time it's goodbye."

One Redditor, ToastedCheesee added: "'Go back to sleep, there isn't anything under your bed'... 'Hes behind you now'. Still haven't gotten over that one and shiver at the memory."

Other chilling responses include a creepy approach to a dating question from the seven-year-old of user Abluesxs. When asked "What's the best way to get a girlfriend?" The child replied: "Tell her to be my girlfriend or she'll never see her parents again."

Redditor Psalm-96 contributes a story about his four-year-old daughter waking him at 6am with the whispered words: 'I want to peel all your skin off'.

The user Like-I-was-sayin commented: "My three-year-old daughter stood next to her new born brother and looked at him for a while then turned and looked at me and said, 'Daddy, it's a monster we should bury it."

"Congratulations on giving birth to the antichrist," another Redditor replied.
