Super Smash Bros coming to Nintendo Switch in 2018 - Get ready

The new game was revealed in a dramatic – but cryptic – video

Nintendo is finally bringing Super Smash Bros to the Switch.

The classic game is just the latest one of the company's classic franchises to arrive on its newest console. It follows updated Mario, Zelda and Splatoon games – and characters from all of those series appeared in the launch trailer.

Nintendo said only that the game would come out in 2018, not even giving details on what part of the year it would be released.

It also didn't reveal any particular details about what the game would include, not even making clear whether the game would be a new entry into the series or simply a remastered version of the game moved to Switch. An announcement from Nintendo said only that "The Super Smash Bros. series is coming to Nintendo Switch".

The announcement came right at the end of the half-hour long Nintendo Direct presentation, which saw the company make a whole host of other announcements. It said that the first paid DLC would come to Splatoon this summer, for instance, and that there would be major updates and competitions in that game too.

It also revealed new details about Mario Tennis, which comes out on 22 June. There will be a free demo coming soon, it said.

"Unleash an arsenal of shots and strategies in all-out tennis battles with friends, family and fan-favourite Mushroom Kingdom characters," Nintendo said. "With up to four-player local (additional accessories required; sold separately) and online* multiplayer, and a story mode that even includes creative boss battles, Mario Tennis Aces is one of the most robust Mario sports games yet. The intuitive and deep gameplay allows for exciting competitions in the living room or, really, anywhere using the power of Nintendo Switch."

There will also be updated versions of old games coming to the Switch. Those include Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker which first came out for the Wii U and Crash Bandicoot.
