A free messaging system has taken the top spot in the app charts, beating a drawing game that spent six weeks at number one.

WhatsApp Messenger finally brought Draw Something by OMGPOP's reign to an end this week as crowds flocked to take advantage of its cost-free messaging.

The app, from WhatsApp Inc, allows cross-platform mobile messaging that lets people exchange messages without having to pay for SMS.

It has taken the top spot on the iPhone paid-for charts and pushed Draw Something, a game that involves players sketching something which their opponents then have to guess, down to fourth place, according to Apple's App Store Official UK Charts.

Second place went to Angry Birds Space by Rovio Mobile Ltd, a puzzle game based on the successful Angry Birds game series.

Meanwhile, top of both the free iPhone and iPad charts was Logos Quiz Game by AticoD; a quiz game that consists of guessing the names of hundreds of logos from different companies.

In at second place on the free iPhone chart was Skill Game by Good Apps UG, while SayHi Translate: Use Your Voice To Speak A New Language Like A Pro from SayHi, took the number two spot in the iPad paid-for chart.
