Nearly half of 10- to 14-year-olds have seen their parents drunk, new research suggests.

A study by the charity Drinkaware found that 46 per cent had seen their parents intoxicated, 29 per cent on more than one occasion. The poll of 1,000 parents and children also found that 72 per cent of parents said they felt very confident talking to their children about drinking and 75 per cent believed they were best placed to do so.

Elaine Hindal, the chief executive of Drinkaware, said parents needed to understand their “significant influence as role models”.
