NICOTINE patches are an effective new treatment for ulcerative colitis, a life-threatening disease linked with cancer, according to researchers from the Prince of Wales Hospital, Bridgend. In the study, which involved 72 patients with the disease, those who wore nicotine patches for six months had significantly reduced symptoms. The findings could explain recent reports that smoking offers some protection against the disease.
