A lonely schoolboy has received a hundreds of birthday cards from around the world and a present from Nasa, after his worried mother urged people on Facebook to help her celebrate his special day.

Molly-Mole Povey, from Newton Abbot, Devon, set up a Facebook page for her son Roman a fortnight ago, after he admitted he had no friends at school.

The mother wrote on the Cards for Roman page: “My beautiful special boy…has no friends and gets so upset”, adding that he often cried himself to sleep.

Mrs Povey added that in the 7 years of primary school, "her lovely adorable boy with difficulties" was only even been invited to one other birthday party, and says no one ever wants to sit next to him on school trips.

"I have even rung friends up and asked if I can pay the party fee to take Roman along and keep an eye on him – but no, this has not worked either," she said.

But after her plea went viral, Roman has over 200 cards from as far afield as Australia to open today as he celebrates turning 11.

Since Mrs Povey’s appeal made headlines Roman has received more attention at school, and he was joined by 10 children at his local cinema for a birthday day out on Saturday, the mother revealed on the social media website.

After her son’s party was such a success, Mrs Povey organised a surprise dinner party for Roman on Tuesday. A staggering 55 people attended the gathering, just two weeks after Roman thought he had no friends.

A video of the heart-warming dinner shows people excitedly hushing as Roman approaches the party, with the schoolboy bashfully grinning as he is greeted by cheers and party poppers.

“It doesn’t take much to make someone’s day,” Mrs Povey wrote on the Cards for Roman Facebook page.

"I was just hoping a couple of school people might give him a card, but it went viral with people offering to send him cards from all over the World."

Mrs Povey thanked those who showed their support, and said the reaction has been “truly inspiring”.
