On 26 December 2004 a huge earthquake with an epicentre off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia triggered a tsunami which left over 230,000 people dead.

Indonesia was worst affected with more than 130,000 reported deaths, but the toll reached tens of thousands in India, Sri Lanka and Thailand.

There were deaths in fourteen countries and more than 3,000 tourists died as the coastline was overcome by 30 metre walls of water.

This British Pathe newsreel shows footage of the tsunami and its horrifying aftermath.
