An American couple have found they may have always been destined to be together - after realising they had been pre-school sweethearts.

Amy Giberson and Justin Pounders had a "shy" but brief romance at the Sunshine Preschool in St Petersburg, Florida when they were three years old - they shared toys, sat together at lunch time and played tag in the playground.

They drifted apart and forgot about each other as they grew up and went to different schools.

Thirty years on, and the pair were reunited by an online dating service.

After being together for a year, during a chance conversation about first crushes, Mr Pounders mentioned a girl named Amy.

Remembering they had attended the same preschool at the same time, they asked their parents for any photos they had and found one of the pair.

Ms Giberson told People.com "We asked our parents to dig up any preschool photos they had

"Justin's mom found a photo of the two of us together and I just started crying, I was ecstatic. I was the Amy he had liked all those years ago! It was definitely meant to be."

Mr Pounders said the moment he had spotted Ms Giberson’s photograph he messaged her as he was “instantly drawn to her”.

He said: "She just had this great energy, you could tell. I can't explain it, but I knew I had to get to know this girl."

Ms Giberson said: "Of course, at that point, we still didn't know we had been pre-K sweethearts, but when we met up and we hugged, it was like I had known him my whole life.

"When I first saw him, I felt that I was staring at the man I was going to marry."

Although not formally engaged yet, the couple have already picked out a wedding date..
