Revealed: The top 10 roads in the world for drivers – and three are in the UK

Bends and acceleration, cruising and braking factors have been measured to help determine the worthiness of the roads

The top 10 roads in the world for drivers to test their skills behind the wheel while taking in a stunning view have been named, and three of them are in the UK.

Car company Avis has determined the best roads for driving enthusiasts by developing the Avis Driving Ratio (ADR), which takes into account the number of bends in the road alongside acceleration, cruising and braking factors to determine the best experience for drivers.

The best road for drivers has been found in Portugal. The N-222, a 28 kilometre stretch between Peso de Regua to Pinhao in Portugal that runs through the Douro Valley has been given an ADR of 11:1.

The perfect ratio would be 10:1, according to the company’s calculations, which would equate to 10 seconds on a straight to every 1 second spent on a bend.

The second best road in the world is Highway 1 from Castroville to Big Sur in California, with an ADR of 8.5:1, while a stretch of road in the UK comes in at third place.

The best road in the UK has been identified as the stretch between Holmes Chapel to Alderley Edge, which twists and undulates before opening into a mile-long stretch in the middle of the countryside, and passes the Lovell Telescope at Jodrell Bank.

The second best road in the UK is the B3515 from Cheddar to Ashwick, while the A591 in the Lake District, a 30 mile stretch between Kendal to Keswick, comes in at number three in the UK, and seventh best in the world.
