The six best fuel-sipping coupes

Two-door style machines don’t tend to be associated with high mpg figures - here’s half a dozen that buck that trend

Coupes are cool. They haven’t always been the most efficient way of getting about, though.

But the modern breed of stylish two-door motors changes that. Coincidentally (or not), the top six all come from premium German manufacturers: here’s the run-down, complete with official economy figures and real-world results from the True MPG testers at What Car? magazine.

6: BMW 640d Coupe

Official mpg: 51.4

Real-world mpg: 45.2

It rides a little keenly for a GT car, and the back seats aren’t for adults, but the 6 Series can cover ground with real verve. Go for the 640d model and you get a beguiling combination of pace and economy.

5: BMW 420d Gran Coupe SE xDrive

Official mpg: 57.6

Real-world mpg: 48.9

Its name suggests it’s smaller than the 6 Series, but this 3 Series based coupe provides comfortable seating for a quartet of adults. It’s a good load-lugger, too, and an enjoyable car to drive.

4: Mercedes-Benz E220 CDI Coupe

Official mpg: 58.9

Real-world mpg: 49.7

Well equipped and better-riding than the popular AMG Sport spec version of the same car, this is all the E-Class Coupe you’ll ever need.

3: Audi TT 2.0 TDI Sport Ultra

Official mpg: 67.3

Real-world mpg: 50.9

One of the most overt coupes there is, the stylish and well equipped TT still manages to be a winner on a long journey. There can’t be many more appealing ways of beating the 50mpg barrier.

2: Audi A5 2.0 TDI Ultra

Official mpg: 67.3

Real-world mpg: 51.6

As classy as ever, and very well equipped, the A5 is at its cleanest with this combination of diesel engine and manual box. You’ve got to fork out extra for nav, but you’ll get most of it back at sell-on time.

1: BMW 220d Coupe

Official mpg: 62.8

Real-world mpg: 55.8

Yet another BMW in this litany of premium German motors, the new 2 Series is unbeatably efficient in coupe form. Another one whose back seats are just for kids, but it’s an entertaining customer with a compelling list of standard equipment.
