Noah Cyrus broke down in tears as she admitted it was “unbearable” living in the shadow of her older sister Miley Cyrus.

The 20-year-old singer opened up about the difficulties she faced growing up alongside her famous sibling as she discussed the meaning behind her new track “Young & Sad”.

The song, which features on her brand new EP The End of Everything, features lyrics which include: “My sister’s like sunshine, bringing good light wherever she’ll go/ and I was born to rain clouds, blessed in her shadows.”

During an Instagram live, Noah elaborated on the meaning behind the lyrics and at one point broke down in tears as she reflected on the criticism she has received over the years.

“I think just the message in the second verse, being born in the family I was in, everyone gave me such a hard time for having a hard time being Miley’s little sister,” she explained.

“But you know, I always felt like I was that person that no one gave a s*** about due to what people said to me online.”

Noah went on to describe the comparisons to her sibling as “absolutely unbearable”, adding: “Everybody always says to me, that no matter what, I was going to be in that shadow.”

The singer said that it was difficult for her to come to terms with and overcome the thought that she would “always” stay in her sister’s shadow.

“That was something I heard my whole life, every single day, my whole life. It was either that or that I wasn’t enough in some way, whether it was the way I look or the way I am,” Noah said.

“Like I said the other day, sometimes I feel like I don’t even breathe right sometimes.”

Noah concluded the discussion by saying she “probably won’t talk about it anymore” but wanted people to understand just how difficult her childhood has been.

“Everybody always says you’re giving the people power by seeing it, but I can’t control seeing it,“ she added. ”It’s been really tough on me.”

Miley has previously spoken out in defence of her younger sister and said she hopes her burgeoning career doesn’t stop her from staying true to her authentic self.

During a 2017 podcast with Elvis Duran, Miley said: “I think it makes you jaded, it makes you guarded, and I don’t ever want her to get like that. I really hope that she never feels those pressures and I hope other people respect her and don’t actually make her something she’s not.”

The former Disney star also shared some of the advice she had given her little sister on the pressures of fame, adding: “I always tell Noah, keep your Instagram comments turned off.

“Never read anything that anyone says about you. Don’t Google yourself.”
