Mystery Instagrammer tips a New York waiter thousands of dollars 'for Jesus'
The recipient of a $5,000 tip from Tips for Jesus is going on a shopping spree to department store Bergdorf Goodman
The anonymous Instagrammer behind the account 'Tips For Jesus' has struck again, this time at a New York bar.
Known for leaving extremely generous tips on bills of varying size, with a receipt as small as $3 receiving a $5,000 tip,'Tips For Jesus' has documented their work with pictures of signed receipts since 2013. With seemingly no other motivation than to reward waiters and waitresses for their service, 'Tips For Jesus' has managed to maintain anonymity despite having 94,000 Instagram followers.
With their most recent tip of $5,000 for Caitlin Cahill, the bartender at Guyer’s in Manhattan's Upper West Side, who served the patron just over $100 of drinks, sources say the gesture brought the bartender to tears.
Varying from their typical photo proof of receipts, the mystery-tipper documented their latest good deed on Instagram by uploading a New York Post blurb about the outrageous tip with the caption, “Thanks to everyone at Guyer’s! And yeah, forgot to take a pic of the receipt, so thanks @nypost!”
According to the New York Post, along with the generous tip, the receipt said “Tips for Jesus” and “We back!” which seems to imply the end of Tips for Jesus's year-long hiatus.
However, Tips for Jesus’s most recent act of kindness may have outed the person behind the account. Cahill claims the tip was left by former PayPal VP Jack Selby, who has previously been linked to the movement. But with no witnesses to confirm or deny these reports, it seems that 'Tips for Jesus' can continue their anonymous work.
When asked about the encounter, Cahill told CBS2, “Out of nowhere he mentioned ‘Tips for Jesus’ and asked if I knew what it was. I said yes and he said, ‘Well, that’s me.’ I thought he was joking at first.”
As for her plans for her new wealth, Cahill says she’s headed straight to Bergdorf Goodman.
