If your best friend doesn’t tag you in at least one meme every day, are they even really your best friend?

Ask many teenagers or millennials and their answer would be no. We are a generation obsessed with memes - we love them. We love those little pictures with funny text so much.

But new research has revealed that not only do memes provide seemingly endless sources of entertainment, they’ve also replaced Twitter as the main news source for millennials.

A study of 2,000 British adults found that political memes tend to be the most widely used and shared, with one in five people sharing at least one meme online every day.

The researchers from LG also asked participants to pick their favourite memes both of 2017 so far and of all time.

This year, the top three memes so far are: Michelle Obama at the Inauguration, Cristiano Ronaldo's statue and 'cash me outside' girl.

Despite our love of memes, the study found that 94 per cent of Brits have never actually created their own ones.

Andrew Coughlin, LG Electronics Mobile Communications Business Leader for Northern Europe, confirmed what most of us had already suspected: “Our research found that the main reason people share memes is because they make them laugh (52 per cent) and that people are most likely to share memes with their friends (49 per cent).”

Much like emojis, gifs and snapchats, memes are simply a new form of communication.
