Yeah, I know that pensions are boring but one of the most crucial financial decisions anyone may take is getting the right annuity.

But for years the major pension firms were able to flog uncompetitive annuities to retiring people who presumed their trusted adviser would give them a decent deal.

Now firms must tell people that they don't have to take the annuity from their pension company and by shopping around they could get a much higher payout, worth thousands of pounds more.

That's especially true of those with medical conditions or who smoke, for instance, who can qualify for a much higher payout than average, but may not get it from their pension firm.
