The Government has backed a committee of MPs that criticised the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority for “inappropriately” withholding information from the public in a report on the clean-up of the Sellafield nuclear facility in Cumbria. It had cited commercial confidentiality.

The US pharmaceuticals giant Pfizer has made a tentative approach to rival AstraZeneca in what would be the biggest ever foreign takeover of a British company. Astra is thought to be resisting Pfizer’s overtures at the moment. A deal could value Astra at more than £60bn.

The online furniture retailer Sofa.com has asked advisers at Altium Capital to look into a potential sale of the business. Memorandums on its successes, such as growing sales by 20 per cent in the year to February, are believed to have been sent to potential investors just before the Easter holiday weekend.

Royal Bank of Scotland’s annual report could be released this week, triggering a fresh backlash against banker bonuses. RBS may be planning big bonuses to hold on to investment banking staff. Barclays’ shareholders are also set to protest over pay arrangements at its meeting on Thursday.
