Anthony Hilton: Casinos want a fairer roll of the dice
My favourite item this week came courtesy of Ian Burke, chief executive of Rank, once one of our major film-makers but today getting its money from gamblers. On Tuesday he was heard to ask journalists and politicians to stop using the term "casino banking". It was, he said, unfair to casinos.
The industry needs to be on good terms with the Government and its regulators to continue to operate existing facilities, let alone open new ones or transfer licences. But Rank claims to detect a chill in its relations with politicians, which it blames on the negative image created by the term casino banking. So there we have it... the reputation of casinos is being dragged down by the banks.
