Amazon is to open a new centre in Manchester this autumn that will create 1,000 jobs over three years, the online retailer has announced today.

The new roles are part of Amazon’s plans to create 2,500 permanent jobs in the UK this year, bringing the company’s total workforce to 14,500 by the end of 2016.

Amazon will be recruiting for a range of roles which includes mangers, engineers, human resources and IT professionals.

Staff working at the fulfilment centre will earn a minimum of £7.20 an hour or more, increasing to £8 within two years.

Permanent employees also receive a comprehensive benefits package, including private medical insurance, a company pension plan, life assurance, income protection, subsidised meals and employee discount.

“We are proud to continue to add new permanent jobs to grow our dedicated and enthusiastic workforce who play a crucial role in delivering a first rate level of service for our customers,” said John Tagawa, Amazon’s Vice President of UK Operations.

Mike Kane, Wythenshawe and Sale East MP, said it was “fantastic news for residents” of his constituency.

The company is also planning a new fulfilment centre in Coalville, Leicestershire later this year, it announced last month. The opening of the two new sites will take the number of Amazon fulfilment centres in the UK to 12.

The company currently employs 40,000 people in Europe and last year created 10,000 jobs.
