A tiny investment company is set to cause confusion on the stock market by floating with a near identical name to the Bristol & West building society.

Bristol & West Investments, a provider of bridging loans for property transactions with a turnover of £650,000, is coming to AIM with a value of just £7m. It has no connection with the mutually owned building society which has millions of members. The investment firm says the building society offered to buy the name for £1,000 in 1963 but has never made another approach. However it seems the building society had learned from its mistakes and registered the domain name Bristol & West on the internet.
