Emap's finance director gets new role

Emap's finance director, Gary Hughes, took personal charge of the company's radio business yesterday, ahead of expected consolidation in the sector.
Emap's "performance" division, which includes its music television channels and music magazines as well as its radio interests, has been without a head since Tim Schoonmaker quit abruptly in January.
The company distributed Mr Schoonmaker's responsibilities among the division's manage-ment, but no senior manager was directly involved until yesterday.
There had been speculation that Emap would poach a radio executive from outside the company to run the division. Instead, Mr Hughes will chair it.
Emap is one of the big three radio players, with brands including Kiss100. It also has large consumer magazines and trade publications divisions.
Mr Hughes said the new role, which is in addition to his responsibilities as finance director, had two aims. Firstly, he would use it to apply the cross-media strategy developed within the performance division to the consumer magazine brands. And he will steer the development of radio, including mergers and acquisitions. "We have an ambition to be market leader [in radio], though not at any price... acquisitions have to play some part but it's not the only game in town," he said.
