Credit checker Experian has bought Garlik, the online identity expert, from private equity firms DFJ Esprit and Doughty Hanson and its founders for an undisclosed sum.

Garlik's main product, DataPatrol, helps consumers protect themselves from identity theft and financial fraud.

The company was formed in 2005 by Mike Harris, the founding chief executive of Egg, Tom Ilube, also of Egg, and Professor Nigel Shadbolt, the former president of the British Computer Society.
