Facebook has been voted the most recommended employer in the UK, topping a tech-dominated list compiled by one of the world’s biggest job sites.

Ninety per cent of current and former employees at the social network giant said they would recommend working at Facebook to a friend, according to jobs comparison and recruiting website Glassdoor.

Computing firm Arm, based in Cambridge and last year bought by Japan’s Softbank, and American multinational GE, secured second and third spot in the ranking.

Tech giants Google and Microsoft also made it in to the top ten.

Online travel company Expedia, spearheaded by chief executive Mark Okerstrom following the recent departure of Dara Khosrowshahi to ride-hailing firm Uber, came in fifth place.

Bloomberg and Thomson Reuters were the highest ranked media companies in 19^th and 20^th spot respectively.

The findings are based on voluntary reviews by almost 90,000 employees based in the UK, collected over the past year.

David Whitby, UK country manager at Glassdoor, said a rating based on friends’ recommendations “can make a big difference to recruiting” candidates.

“You wouldn’t eat in a poorly rated restaurant or stay in a hotel that didn’t have good customer feedback, so why apply for a job at a company that isn’t strongly recommended by the people that already work there?” he said.

Fiona Mullan, international vice president for HR at Facebook, said the company was “delighted” to be named the most recommended employer.

“It is a result that is even more meaningful as it is based on employee feedback,” she added.

The tech sector’s strong showing in the ranking will be welcomed by an industry battling accusations of cultural problems.

In August, a Google employee in the US was fired over a memo criticising the company’s diversity policies.

Last year’s ranking saw Expedia come top, followed by Arm and home maintenance firm HomeServe UK.
