The energy grid operator National Grid has awarded £3.1bn worth of contracts to companies including the construction group Balfour Beatty to upgrade its gas distribution systems.
National Grid has handed out a total of four, eight-year contracts covering its networks in the North West, Midlands, East and London. Morrison Utility Services and the Swedish engineering company Skanska were also awarded contracts.
