The number of passengers going through through Heathrow airport jumped last month as travellers increasingly headed to far away destinations.

The airport reported today that 6.2 million passengers passed through Heathrow in April 2014, up 6.7 per cent on the month and 1.9 per cent on an underlying basis stripping out the earlier timing of Easter in 2013.

Passengers increasingly headed further afield with emerging markets rising including China, which was up 12.5 per cent, Mexico up 15.9 per cent, and India up 9.2 per cent.

The airport also reported cargo business was up 4.4 per cent with China, Mexico and Russia all recording double digit growth.

Heathrow chief executive Colin Matthews said: “Our capital programme and continuous operational improvements have supported record customer satisfaction levels, with the proportion of passengers rating their journey as ‘very good’ or ‘excellent’ increasing from fewer than half six years ago, to a record high of 80% this quarter.”

The airport will open Terminal 2 on 4 June.
