Nearly 6,000 jobs were created in the City last month, 30 per cent more than last year and 6 per cent more than in January, according to a financial services recruitment company. Meanwhile, dissatisfied bankers unhappy with meagre bonuses pushed job application numbers up by a whopping 47 per cent, Astbury Marsden said. The agency received 7,400 applications last month, far outstripping the 5,020 in February 2010.

Mark Cameron, the chief operating officer, said: "While some City workers – many of whom will be the rainmakers and star traders – will be enjoying very lucrative bonuses this year, the mood regarding bonuses for most City staff is far from content." He added that some investment banks were bracing themselves for staff turnover of more than 20 per cent.
