UK car production up 9.3% as General Motors announce Ellesmere Port Vauxhall investment

The number of cars built in the UK last month was almost 10 per cent up on a year ago, boosted by strong export demand, new figures showed.

There were 94,352 cars produced in April, an increase of 9.3 per cent on the same month in 2011, and up by 11.8 per cent for the first four months of the year.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said the figures showed that the UK remained one of the most competitive countries for car firms.

Almost half a million cars were built in the UK in the first four months of the year, with more than 400,000 for export.

The number of engines built increased by 1.2 per cent last month to 192,408, while commercial vehicle production rose by 3.2 per cent to almost 9,000, although it was 9 per cent down in the year to date.

Paul Everitt, SMMT chief executive, said: "UK manufacturing of cars, commercial vehicles and engines increased in April, boosted by strong export demand that is almost 10 per cent ahead of last year.

"Sustained investment is delivering desirable products to markets around the world and efforts by employees, trades unions and government are helping ensure the UK remains one of the most competitive locations for global automotive companies."
