The brewer Young & Co boasts 14 pubs along the River Thames that did bumper trade during the Diamond Jubilee. The company thinks these and other venues will do well from the London Olympics, although in common with its rivals it has found the bad weather a challenge.

Speaking at the annual meeting yesterday, the chairman, Nicholas Bryan, said performance of late "was inevitably affected by the poor weather conditions" but "we are anticipating a busy period in a number of our pubs and in our hotels, where bookings are very strong".

Revenue at houses managed by Young's was up 10.1 per cent in the first 13 weeks of the financial year.

The Calf at the Westfield shopping centre in Stratford, near the Olympic park, opened last month and is trading well.
