These are traditionally made out of Scottish pine trees, and still are the most commonly used Christmas tree in America.

4. Hypnotism

Scottish surgeon James Braid is considered the "father of hypnosis".

5. Lime Cordial

This was first bottled and sold by the son of a Leith shipbuilder, Lachlan Rose who patented the method.

6. The Fax Machine

An early prototype of this was invented by Scottish engineer Alexander Band between 1843-1846. He also invented the electric clock.

7. Indoor toilet

According to historian Allan Burnett, the earliest indoor toilet - dating back to around 3200-2200BC - was found in the wall of a village in Skara Brae, Orkney.

8. Colour photography

Scottish physicist James Clerk Maxwell took the first permanent colour photograph of this tartan ribbon in 1861.
