Here are the moments when Joan Rivers took her comedy too far

Joan Rivers died on Thursday age 81, a week after suffering a heart attack during surgery.

In her comedy and in her everyday life nothing was off-limits, including the Holocaust, disabled people, Anne Frank, 9/11 and Gaza. Ms Rivers once explained her motivation was "to make everybody laugh at everything and deal with things", adding that she believed comedy helped "shrink the dragon".

But there were some moments where Ms Rivers' outrageous statements went too far, most notably last month when she said Palestinians "deserve to be dead", something she later said was "taken out of context".

1. On Catholicism:

"It's so EASY being a Catholic. All you have to do is get f*ed by a priest, and they give you a set of candlesticks."

2. On Michelle Obama:

Asked whether the United States would ever see the first gay or female president, she responded: "We already have it with Obama, so let's just calm down... You know Michelle (Obama) is a trans."

3. On living with her daughter, Melissa:

"Those women in the basement in Cleveland had more space."

4. On Heidi Klum's dress for the Oscars:

"The last time a German looked this hot was when they were pushing Jews into the ovens."

5. On Jennifer Lawrence:

"I love that she’s telling everyone how wrong it is to worry about retouching and body image, and meanwhile, she has been touched up more than a choir boy at the Vatican."

6. On Gaza:

When asked her opinion about the death toll in Gaza, she said: "The dead? You deserve to be dead. You started it. Don't you dare make me feel sad about that."

7. On Kim Kardashian's baby:

“I’ve never seen a six-month-old so desperately in need of a wax.”

8. On Katie Holmes:

“Katie Holmes is not a very good actress. Did you see her try and play John F. Kennedy’s wife? She was so bad he shot himself in it.”
