There is more than just pride and a reputation to uphold motivating Louis van Gaal to push his team into the top four - according to reports he's also personally set to pocket £1m if Manchester United qualify for the Champions League.

It was made clear to the former Netherlands manager when he took over that finishing the season in the top four was the top priority - and minimum requirement.

According to the Daily Star, that was made clear with the huge bonus.

Manchester United missed out on qualification for Europe's elite competition last season after finishing seventh under David Moyes.

The absence of Champions League football has had a huge financial impact on the club and any extended period out of the competition threatens to diminish the club's status as one of the biggest in the world.

Van Gaal currently has them on course to finish in the top four, with fifth placed Liverpool five points behind with eight games to go.
