The James Foley video reached 83 per cent of the UK population

On Tuesday night the Islamic State released a video showing the murder of freelance American journalist James Foley.

The video was removed from YouTube within minutes but versions of it still exist elsewhere online, while it understandably dominated news agendas around the world.

A YouGov poll for the Times Red Box interviewed 2,028 UK adults between August 20 and 21 and found that the video had reached up to 83 per cent of the British poulation.

The following charts only relate to people who said they were aware of the video, or didn't know.

Overall, Britons believe the media should not even report on the video's existence.
