Ian Burrell: The DIY future for TV journalists

Television journalists got an insight into their futures with the resourcefulness of Joe Tidy of Sky News after his camera became water-damaged in the floods last month.

Rather than panicking, Tidy turned to his iPhone and the Dejero app to film and edit his piece on the desperate attempts to save people’s homes in Marlow, Buckinghamshire. At one point Tidy strung his phone up in a small tree to create a makeshift tripod.

There was no need for a separate camera operator, let alone the sound technicians who used to be deployed in a bygone age. When the wind noise started to become a problem, Tidy took off a sock and wrapped it around his mobile/camera to muffle the interference.
